Uttarakhand is the land of gods, there are many temples and sacred places in both the regions of Uttarakhand, whether Kumaon or Garhwal. Here, in this post I will discuss about the prominent temples of Uttarakhand's Kumaon region that are worth visiting.
I have compiled a list of prominent temples of Kumaon region, which should not be missed by the pilgrims or devotees who come for the Kumaon's pilgrim or religious tour.

                           Bagnath temple, BAGESHWAR

At the heart of the holy town of Bageshwar lies the ancient temple of Lord Shiva that attracts devotees from around the country during the occasion of Shiva Ratri.
The Baganath temple is actually the most famous religious place from where the city has got its name. It is situated at the confluence point of  two sacred rivers named Gomti and Saryu.
Bagnath temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and this is the place where he used to meditate. It is an ancient temple constructed in 1450 by King Lakshmi Chand of Kumaon. The best time to visit here is Shivratri. During this, devotees arrive from distant places for sanctifying the Lord Shiva.
The literal meaning of Baghnath is the Master of Tiger. As Lord Shiva is believed to be seated on a tiger skin, he is also known as Baghnath. 















                               JAGESHWAR DHAM, ALMORA

Jageshwar Temple is a conglomeration of a number of large and small temples and one of the Swayambhu (Jyotir Linga) Lingas found in India.

It is a 2500 years old temple complex nestled amidst spectacular scenic vistas of the Himalayas

and is an ideal retreat to unwind, rejuvenate and seek solace. The temple is a beautiful example of sheer architectural grandeur and

houses other temples dedicated to Surya, Mritunjay Mahadev, Nau Durga, Chandika, Nav Graha and other Hindu deities.

The complex comprises of 124 temples, hundreds of statues and the famous Swayambhu Linga named Nagesh.

Haat (hat) Kalika or Mahakali temple is a very ancient temple, situated on a mountain that is called ' Shail parvat - शैल पर्वत ' the temple is believed to have chosen by Adi Guru Shankaracharya for establishing the Mahakali Shakti peeth

in the 9th Century. This Haat Kalika Shakti peeth's history dates back to more than thousand years old and is an important pilgrimage site among Indians especially for the Bengali people and the people of Uttarakhand.

The pilgrimage is one of the most famous pilgrimages situated in Uttarakhand. According to popular belief, during ancient time after being defeated from Shumbh the deities came to Shail parvat they eulogized the goddesss to get rid of the vices of the demons.

Being pleased by the devotion Goddess Durga took the form of Mahakali and killed the demon "Shumbh". The deities worshipped this furious form of Mahakali at this place, since then this place is famous as the Mahakali Shakti peeth. When patriarch Shankaracharya

was travelling from Pashupatinath to Kedarnath, he came to this Shakti peeth and worshipped 'Mahakali'. The famous Haat Kalika Mela (fair) is organised at this place, visitors come from far flung places to offer prayers to 'Mahakali'.

This temple is of high importance for the India Armed Forces' Kumaon Regiment as well. Goddess Mahakali is designated deity of Kumaon Regiment. Insignias of Kumaon regiment and glorious sagas of Kumaon regiment can be seen written at the temple premises.

Golu Deity or God Golu is the famous mythological god of the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand state. Originally Golu Deity is considered as the incarnation of ​​Shiva.



Golu devta is prayed as key god (isht dev) by most of the peoples in whole Uttarakhand.

Golu devta is known as God of Justice among the people of Uttarakhand but to seek justice from Golu devta you have to write a letter to Golu Deity. Yes, you heard it right.



So far, you may have seen people praying in temples, but in the Almora and Nainital districts of Uttarakhand, to express your desire with the Golu Devta you have to send a letter, or write a letter and tie it in the temple premises.



Most of the people marry in Golu's temple as people believe marrying in front of Golu deity help them in having successful  after marriage life, that's why one invitation card is send to Golu deity as well.














About Baijnath 





                                     Baijnath Temple, Kausani



Baijnath temple- Baijnath temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, is on the bank of river Gomti, situated at just 12 kilometres from the Kausani market. The area around the Baijnath is used to be the famous Katyur valley of ancient time. The Baijnath temple is said to be built by the Katyuri Kings in the 11th A.D.

This is a very nice place. On one side of Temple there is a flowing Gomti river and on the other side there is a Baijnath lake filled with colorful fishes. The centuries old Shiva temple is like a miracle in itself. The beautiful temple carved with rocks is still intact in its place since 11th A.D. The crowd is far away from this place.The panoramic view of Himalayas add flavours  to the beauty of this place.The temple has religious significance as well.

There are many temples of Golu Devata in Kumaun, and the most popular are at Chitai, Champawat and Ghorakhal. It is popular belief that Golu Devta dispenses quick justice to the devotee.

Devotees in turn offer bells and sacrifice animals after the fulfillment of their wishes. Thousands of bells of every size can be seen hanging over the temple premises. Many devotees file a lot of written petitions daily, which are received by the temple.

Kainchi is a beautiful secluded mountain ashram located in the Kumaon hills of Uttarakhand, situated at 20 kms away from The Lake City; Nainital. On an average Hundred of devotees visit Kainchi everyday.

Neem Karoli Baba was a big devotee of  Hanumanji.  Neem Karoli Baba built around 108 Hanuman temples in his life. Presently there are temples of Hanumanji built by Neem Karoli Maharaj in America's Texas as well.



Neem Karoli Baba, who has shown the right path to Facebook and Apple founders Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, represents the Indian heritage in western countries. For the blessings of Baba, who always wore a blanket, along with Indians renowned foreign celebrities also visit his Ashram.

                        Patal bhuvaneshwar, Gangolihat
Patal Bhuvaneshwar is a very ancient temple of Lord shiva situated inside the cave. It is situated at an elevation of 1653 metres above the sea level. The cave of Patal bhuvaneshwar is 160 m long and 90 m deep from the mouth of cave.

The entrance to  Patal bhuvaneshwar cave looks very compact and suffocated but believe me after entering the cave you will feel real fresh air inside and no suffocation at all.

I was amazed to see the figures of god and hindu deities carved naturally on the walls and rocks of the cave.



According to mythological perception this cave temple is primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is also believed that there is a habitation of 33 crore deities inside the cave.



There is a beautiful view of Rajrambha, Nandadevi, Panchachuli and Nandakhat peaks from the Patal bhuvaneshwar.



The mysterious cave of Patal Bhuvaneshwar is believed to be as old as the Earth itself. There is a very narrow tunnel leads to this centuries old cave. Inside the cave there are complex structures of  rocks and carved images of  various gods can be seen. Almost every God that one would have heard of resides in this mysterious cave.

One can see a big rock similar to mythological character "Sheshnag" inside the cave holding Earth on its head. After going further one can see the rock inscribed "Kalp vraksh", "Airavat hathi" of Indra king, hairs of Lord Shiva.

There are 4 pillars inside the cave that depicts Kalyuga, Satyuga, Dwaparyuga, Tretayuga. The height of the pillar of Kalyuga above the floor is 3 feet above the surface. Acoording to Skanda Purana, when the Kalyuga's pillar will touch the above rock ( galaxy) then the Kalyuga will end. Right now, there is 1.5 feet distance between Kalyuga's pillar and galaxy rock.

There are internal caves as well inside this cave. It is also believed that the internal caves are connected to char dhams of India.

                                                   Dunagiri Temple, Ranikhet

Dunagiri temple is located in Dwarahat block of almora district in Uttarakhand. The temple is at a distance of 14 kms form dwarahat and one needs to walk

It is believed that the pandavas of Mahabharata took shelter at dunagiri and pandukholi is the place where they stayed for a period of time. According to the mythology Hanuman of Ramayana dropped some part of sanjivni buti when he was carrying a mountain to lanka. Himalayan peaks like chaukhamba, trishul, etc. can be seen from the place which attracts lots of tourist to this area.

                                 Dol Ashram, Almora

Kalyanika Himalaya Devasthanam also known as Dol Ashram is located in Almora district of Uttarakhand state in India. This ashram is spread over 8 acres area which is situated in the middle of a dense forest on the path of Almora. Dol Ashram Almora is situated in a very peaceful environment.

The main aim of this ashram is that people could get a center of meditation, where they could awaken their conscience. That is why tourists from abroad come to this ashram for mental and spiritual peace. A 126-meter high temple has also been constructed in the Dol Ashram Almora. The world’s largest Shri Yantra (a form of a mystical design) is established in Dol Ashram Almora. The weight of this Shri Yantra is 1.5 tonnes, which was established in April 2018.







                           Mukteshwar Dham, Nainital


Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple is a sacred and mainly a Lord Shiva temple with other Hindu deities, located on a hilltop and about 5500 years old Mahadev Shiva Temple, it is a one of must visit Place in Nainital. Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple is established by Pandavas during the 12 years of forest life. The trek to the top is scenic and very beautiful. A long climb, deodar and pine trees make it just lovely walk. The Mukteshwar town gets its name from this ancient temple and the landscape view is very amazing.
